Grant Gudgel Victorious At Saguaro Amateur
January 09, 2025 | Cowboy Golf
SCOTTSDALE – Oklahoma State freshman Grant Gudgel fired a 9-under par 201 this week to win the Saguaro Amateur at Talking Stick Golf Course.
The Cowboy freshman had not played a competitive round until last week's Sonoran Amateur at Starr Pass in Tucson due to a wrist injury, opened the tournament with a 7-under par 63 and never looked back, winning by four shots over Davis Johnson of Scottsdale.
"Just very grateful to be here the whole week I kind of got off to hot starts pretty quick which is nice. Getting off to hot starts are nice … birdies to be made if you get on the fairway, but it is so key to get in it off the tee," Gudgel said.
"I never really was comfortable. I feel like I had a four-shot lead with some to play and I knew the guys behind me were right on my tail and I knew they were going to make some birdies so very grateful to come out on top."
After his opening 63, he fired a 67 during the second round before closing with his 71. Gudgel's first round got off to a hot start with an eagle at the second hole. He would add birdies at the fifth and eighth to go out in 31. His lone bogey of the day would come at the 11th. Gudgel would add birdies at the 13th and 14th before closing with two more birdies over the final two holes to get to 7 under for the day.
Gudgel's second round featured four birdies against just one bogey on his way to a 3-under score. During his final round he carded three birdies on his opening nine to go out in even-par 35. HIs back nine featured eight pars and a bogey to come home in 36.
The Troon Saguaro Amateur Series, founded in 2017, is a world-ranked amateur tournament series that is hosting 10 tournaments in the 2024-25 season. This is the 12th year of the Saguaro Amateur, the original event (and championship event) of the Series.
