Cowboy Basketball bolsters front court with another Big 12 transfer
June 27, 2024 | Cowboy Basketball
6-foot-7 forward Patrick Suemnick, a former NJCAA All-American who has played the past two years for Big 12 rival West Virginia, is transferring to Oklahoma State for his final season, head coach Steve Lutz announced.
Â
Suemnick (pronounced SUM-nick) was a versatile and efficient contributor for the Mountaineers in 2023-24, appearing in all 32 games with six starts. He shot 54% from the field and -- in league play -- ranked third among Big 12 regulars in offensive rebounding percentage (13.8%) and seventh in fouls drawn (4.7 per 40 minutes).
Â
Suemnick averaged 4.1 points for the year but was at his best against the nation's best, putting up 8.5 points on 65% shooting in eight games against AP top-25 opponents. He scored 20 and 16 respectively in upsets of No. 3 Kansas and No. 25 Texas.
Â
"You can never have enough size, experience and versatility," Lutz said. "Pat brings all of these things to the table, and more. He's a strong, skilled player and an intense competitor who will do whatever it takes to help his team be successful. Off the court, he's a great guy from a great family. We're happy he's a Cowboy."
Â
Suemnick started his collegiate career at Robert Morris before transferring to Triton College in River Grove, Ill. for his sophomore season. He was a first team NJCAA All-American that year while leading the Trojans to a 30-6 record and the national semifinals. Along the way he averaged 12 points and six rebounds while shooting 55% from the floor and 42% from long range. He earned Region 4 Player of the Year honors along with all-defensive team status and was also the MVP of the 2022 NJCAA All-Star game.
Â
Suemnick signed with Robert Morris after a prep year at Bosco Institute in Crown Point, Ind. He averaged 14.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and received the school's Grady Eifert All-In Award, given annually to a student-athlete who excels on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
Â
The Green Bay, Wisc. native won a state championship during his senior year at Denmark High School. He averaged 19.1 points and 10.2 rebounds on his way to all-state honors. Suemnick was also a standout pitcher on the baseball team with a fastball clocked upwards of 90 miles per hour.
Â
Experienced transfers have a consistent theme in Lutz's inaugural Oklahoma State recruiting class. The eight scholarship newcomers, to date, are all upperclassmen. Five of them, including Suemnick, are entering their fifth year of eligibility.
