Cowgirl Tennis Downs Fairfield, Advances in NCAA Championships

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's top-ranked women's tennis team defeated Fairfield, 4-0, Saturday night to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center.Â

The Cowgirls improved to 28-0 on the season and advance past the first round for the 10th time in their last 11 appearances.

Play opened with the doubles point going the way of the Cowgirls, as the third-ranked pairing of Anastasiya Komar and Ange Oby Kajuru made quick work of Maeve Cassidy and Sarah Liu, 6-0. Court two claimed the point for the Cowgirls, as Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez defeated Francesca Karman and Lily Malinowski, 6-0.Â

Kristina Novak and Safiya Carrington had their match left unfinished leading Laina Campos and Nicolette Loeffler, 4-2.Â

Singles play opened with No. 18 Komar defeating Liu 6-0, 6-0, and No. 84 Miyamoto besting Karman 6-0, 6-0 to push the match to the brink.

Needing one point to clinch the match, Gonzalez defeated Cassidy 6-2, 6-0 to advance the Cowgirls to the Round of 32.Â

Three courts went unfinished due to the Cowgirl victory. Novak led Malinowski 6-1, 5-1, No. 46 Peyre was leading Plumtree 6-0, 3-2 and No. 72 Carrington was up on Loeffleer 6-1, 5-4 before being left unfinished.Â

The Cowgirls will face SMU tomorrow at 2 p.m. with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.Â
