Hayden Simpson Places Second at U20 World Team Trials

GENEVA, Ohio – Oklahoma State wrestler Hayden Simpson finished runner-up at the U20 World Team Trials Friday afternoon, falling just shy of a spot at this summer's U20 World Championships.
Wrestling at 130 kg in the Greco-Roman division, Simpson began the day with a bye into the challenge tournament finals, needing just a single win over Cameron Geuther to advance to the best-of-three championship series. Simpson quickly took command of the match and held a 7-0 lead early in the second period, but Geuther was able to rattle off four straight points to close the deficit. The Cowboy stood his ground, however, extending his lead late en route to a 13-4 victory.
In a rematch of the U.S. Open finals, Simpson was unable to find his offense against Oregon State's Aden Attao, who took both matches to secure his place on Team USA.
Ten more Cowboys will be in action tomorrow as both freestyle divisions begin. The first session is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. CT with the U20 tournaments concluding that night and U23 brackets extending into Sunday afternoon.
