Cowgirl Track & Field Pushes Three Through to NCAA Championships in Women’s 10K for First Time in Program History
May 23, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field continued action at the NCAA West Prelims Thursday, with three Cowgirls punching their tickets to the NCAA Championships in the women's 10,000 Meters.
For the first time in program history, three Cowgirls will compete in the women's 10,000 Meter Final at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, just one night after the Cowboys accomplished the same feat in the men's 10K. Taylor Roe, Gabby Hentemann and Molly Born each earned their spots in Eugene with top-12 finishes overall.
Roe ran a patient race for the first two miles before exploding to the lead with roughly 3,000 meters to go, never looking back on her way to an eight-second victory to secure the NCAA West Preliminary title. Hentemann and Born found each other in the pack and slowly picked off runners until they secured their spots in the top 12, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.
Between the men's and women's 10K, OSU will have six athletes competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, three more than any school in the nation. Prior to this season, the Cowgirls had never qualified multiple athletes in the 10,000 Meters.
Earlier in the day, several Cowgirls advanced through to the quarterfinals of their respective events. Billah Jepkirui (first) and Grace Boone (third) earned automatic bids to the next round in the first heat of the 1,500 Meters, with each earning a big Q due to their top-5 finish in the heat.
In the women's 800 Meters, Gabija Galvydyte and Kaylie Politza moved onto Saturday's Quarterfinal round with nearly identical times. Galvydyte earned her automatic spot via her first-place finish in the second heat, with Politza taking a time qualifier as one of the six best times outside of the auto qualifiers.
Quarterfinal action for the men's events kick off Friday with Alex Stitt and Fouad Messaoudi in the 1,500 Meters at 2:15 p.m. CT. The rest of the Cowboys' schedule can be found below (all times CT):
Steeplechase – 2:40 p.m.
The entirety of the NCAA West Preliminary rounds are streamed live on ESPN+ and live results for the meet can be found here.
