Cowboy Basketball adds WKU transfer Newman
May 11, 2024 | Cowboy Basketball
Brandon Newman, a Western Kentucky transfer who started his career at Purdue, will play his final season of college basketball at Oklahoma State, head coach Steve Lutz announced.
"Experience matters in this game," Lutz said. "Brandon has been to four straight NCAA tournaments and played a major role in our postseason success at Western Kentucky and Purdue. He's a skilled guard who can shoot, rebound and defend at a high level, and he's a great guy, as well. We're excited that he'll be joining us at OSU."
Â
The 6-foot-5 Newman, who is described as a "shooting wing", has been part championship runs in both the Big Ten and Conference USA. His teams have combined for nearly 100 wins in four seasons (98-36, .731).
Â
Newman was the second-leading scorer and an honorable mention all-conference performer for Lutz at Western Kentucky. He started all 34 games, averaging 10.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals while knocking down 51 threes.
Â
Newman was at his best late in the year, reaching double-figures in eight of the last 12 games. He scored 15 points on 4-of-7 three-point shooting in the CUSA final to send the Hilltoppers back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2013.
Â
A 2023 Purdue graduate, Newman was a four-year member of the basketball team but burned just two seasons of eligibility after redshirting his true freshman season and gaining a bonus year from his participation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
Newman averaged 6.3 points over 88 games as a Boilermaker and logged 30 starts. He helped Purdue to the 2022 Sweet 16 and started the last six games of the 2023 season on a team that won the Big Ten regular season title and finished at No. 3 in the final AP Poll.
Â
Lutz helped recruit and coach Newman – a four-star recruit ranked 75th by Rivals – as a Purdue assistant. Newman averaged 27.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals as a senior at Valparaiso High School and was runner-up for the 2019 Indiana Mr. Basketball Award.
Â
Newman is the fifth Division I transfer to sign with OSU this spring and the sixth member of the 2024 recruiting class, joining Devante "Devo" Davis (6-4, G, Arkansas), Arturto Dean (5-11, G, FIU), Robert Jennings (6-7, F, Texas Tech) and Marchelus "Chi Chi" Avery (6-7, F, UCF). PHHoenix Prep guard Jeremiah Johnson signed last fall.
