Gabby Hentemann Collects Second Career Outdoor Big 12 Title as Cowgirls Lead After Day One of Big 12 Championships
May 10, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
WACO, Texas – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field kicked off action at the Big 12 Track & Field Championships on Thursday, with Gabby Hentemann taking home OSU's first individual title of the weekend in the women's 10,000 Meters.
Hentemann earned her second career 10K outdoor Big 12 title in three years with a dominant performance, leading 21 of the 25 laps overall. She led the first 8,000 meters before Texas' Eva Jess made a move to the front that was matched by Hentemann and dropped the rest of the field. From there, Hentemann regained the lead with one lap to go and left no doubt, winning the race by four seconds overall.
Her victory plus the eight points scored in the Hammer Throw earlier in the day pushed the Cowgirls to the team lead after one day of action.
In the Hammer Throw, Rachel Neaves and Johnna Orange each earned All-Big 12 honors with their third-and seventh-place finishes overall. Neaves entered the final series of throws sitting fifth before launching a toss of 58.30 meters that bumped her up two spots as she was able to hold on for a career-best finish in the event.
Elsewhere in the field, a quintet of Cowgirls contested the first four of seven events in the women's Heptathlon, with Bailey Golden (second), Olivija Vaitaityte (fifth) and Annie Molenhouse (seventh) currently sitting in scoring position.
On the men's side, Adisu Guadie scored the lone points of the day for the Cowboys with his third-place finish in the 10,000 Meters. Guadie hung around for the entirety of the race and was right behind the leader with 100 meters to go before Iowa State's Sanele Masondo sprinted ahead and took the title.
In preliminary action, Billah Jepkirui, Cameron McConnell and Grace Boone each earned a spot in Saturday's final in the women's 1,500 Meters. Alex Stitt and Brian Musau also earned spots in the 1,500 Meter final on the men's side. Caio Almeida won his heat in the men's 400 Meter Hurdles and will also compete in the finals on Saturday.
Day two opens up Friday with the final five events of the men's Decathlon and final four events of the women's Heptathlon starting at 11 a.m. CT. Finals of the Long Jump and Steeplechase will take place alongside preliminary action in the remaining events on the track. The entirety of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships are streamed live on ESPN+.
