Position Preview: Offensive Line
April 05, 2024 | Cowboy Football
The 2024 Cowboy offensive line is likely the most experienced line in college football history.
Seven offensive linemen return who made multiple OSU starts in 2023, including six redshirt super seniors and one redshirt senior. That group alone combines for 200 career FBS starts, 284 career FBS games played and an average age of 23.56 years old on the date of the season opener.
The numbers listed above don't include the 15 starts and 21 games played from incoming Arizona State transfer Isaia Glass or the other 26 games played from OSU's returning reserve linemen. Add that in and the Cowboy offensive line enters 2024 with 215 FBS starts and 331 FBS games played. In the "super senior" era, Florida State led the nation by a wide margin last year with 214 starts and 307 games played on the offensive line entering the season. The 2024 Cowboys surpass both of those marks.
The unit is headlined by Joe Michalski at center, who emerged as the leader of the unit in 2023 and has 23 career starts. He was named a season captain in a vote by his teammates and an honorable mention for Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches.
Tackles Dalton Cooper and Jake Springfield lead the way with 49 and 40 career starts, respectively, and are followed by Preston Wilson with 34 starts and Cole Birmingham with 26. The latter two join Jason Brooks Jr. and Taylor Miterko as players who have moved around the offensive line and are expected to continue to compete for the starting spots at guard.
In addition to that group, Noah McKinney, Austin Kawecki, Jack Endean, Davis Dotson and Jakobi Sanders also have playing experience, and nine others provide depth.
