Golden Leads Heptathlon Through First Day of Jim Click Shootout in Arizona
April 05, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
TUCSON, Ariz. – Several Oklahoma State multi-event athletes began their first full multi of the season Friday at the Jim Click Shootout in Arizona.
Cowgirl Bailey Golden leads the women's Heptathlon through the first full day of competition with 3,524 points through four of seven contested events. Golden secured first place in both the Heptathlon High Jump and Shot Put events and adding a third-place finish in the Hep 100 Meter Hurdles. Her time of 13.76 in the hurdles also puts her second in program history in the event.
In the fourth and final event of the day, Kessiah Bemis took gold in the Hep 200 Meters with her time of 24.02, giving the Cowgirl Heptathletes three victories across the four completed events thus far. Through the first day of action, Golden sits in first, followed by Cowgirls Katie Chapman, Annie Molenhouse, Olivija Vaitaityte and Bemis in fourth, seventh, 11th and 15th.
"The women took advantage of the weather today," Associate Head Coach Josh Langley said. "I loved watching the group work together and support each other all day. Bailey, Annie and Katie each had the best first day of their careers. They have put themselves in a great position for tomorrow. Olivija and Kessiah each had good individual performances and are in a good spot to put up good scores overall."
On the men's side, Big 12 indoor runner-up Philip Frank sits just 10 points off the lead through the first five events of the Decathlon. Frank set new personal bests in the Decathlon 100 and 400 Meters as he finished inside the top 4 of every event thus far. Behind Frank, fellow Cowboys Will Quintana and Crayton Shaw also set new personal best scores on day one as they sit just outside the top 10.
"All 3 guys had day 1 overall PR's," Langley said. "I'm especially proud of Phil and Will for running big personal bests in the 400 in some pretty brutal wind and cold at the end of an 8-hour first day. "
The Cowboy and Cowgirl multis will wrap up competition tomorrow in Arizona as the rest of the team heads to Fayetteville, Ark., for the first time this season outdoors for the Arkansas Spring Invitational. Competition in Arkansas kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m. CT, with the entire meet streamed live on SEC Network +.
