Schubart’s Record Night Carries Cowboy Baseball Past Wichita State
April 30, 2024 | Cowboy Baseball
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 31-14, while WSU fell to 22-24.
OSU smashed a season-high nine homers in the contest. Along with Schubart's big night, Colin Brueggemann homered twice, while Carson Benge, Aidan Meola and Avery Ortiz also went deep.
Schubart finished the contest 5-for-5 with seven RBIs, while Benge was 2-for-3 with a grand slam and four RBIs. It marked the fourth game this season the Cowboy duo both went deep.
Prior to Schubart's record-setting effort, OSU had 18 three-homer games in program history, with 14 different Cowboys achieving that feat. Schubart also became the fourth Poke to hit three or more homers in a game multiple times, joining Roy York, Adam Carr and Trevor Boone.
Schubart became only the second Big 12 player to homer four times in a game, joining Missouri's Jacob Priday (2008), and he also set the OSU and conference record with 18 total bases in the contest.
Dominick Reid started on the mound and picked up the first win of his career as the right-hander worked three hitless innings and picked up five strikeouts. Five Cowboys came on in relief and combined for eight strikeouts in four innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
OSU scored 11 runs in the first inning, a new season-high. The frame consisted of four hits, two of them homers, and six walks.
The first three batters reached base in the opening frame, allowing Schubart to double and bring home two runs. Meola grounded into a fielder's choice bringing another run home, and the next three batters walked to plate two more runs. A sacrifice fly from Kollin Ritchie added one more before OSU began its home run barrage.
Benge got things started with a grand slam for his 12th homer of the season, and Schubart followed with his first blast of the night to make the score 11-0.
Ortiz joined the home run derby by hitting his eighth bomb of the season in the second inning and pushing the lead to 13.
Three consecutive deep balls highlighted the third inning as Schubart, Meola and Brueggemann went yard, pushing the Cowboys' total to six homers in the game and their lead to 16-0.
The Shockers scored five runs across the fourth and fifth innings, but the offense kept firing for the Pokes.
Schubart hit his third homer of the game with a deep shot to left field in the fifth, and Brueggemann followed up with his second deep ball two batters later to create a 20-5 game.
The sixth frame went down in OSU history as Schubart bombed a ball just over the wall in right-center field for his record-setting fourth round tripper.
OSU returns to Big 12 action Friday when the Cowboys open a road series at Texas. The opener in Austin is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
