April 20, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Cowboy freshman Christian Carroll, as well as alumni Daton Fix and Alex Dieringer, wrapped up action at the Olympic Team Trials at Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday.
Despite his youth, Carroll impressed over the weekend as the No. 9 seed at 97 kg. The Cowboy found himself trailing 6-2 to No. 8 Anthony Cassioppi in his first-round match but rattled off a pair of clutch takedowns in the second period to win, 6-6, by criteria.
In the quarterfinals, Carroll took the mat against top-seeded J'den Cox, a two-time World champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist. Carroll kept it close as neither wrestler found much offense, but Cox was eventually able to slip by with a 1-1 win by criteria. Carroll then fell to No. 5 Nathan Jackson in the consolation quarterfinals.
A 2021 World silver medalist, Fix began his weekend with a 2019 NCAA finals rematch against No. 6 Nick Suriano in the 57 kg quarterfinals on Friday morning. Holding a slim 3-1 lead in the second period, Fix secured a late takedown to ice the match and advance to the semifinal round against second-seeded Thomas Gilman.
There, Gilman held a 2-0 edge after the first period and tacked on in the second for a 6-0 decision. Fix's run in State College then came to an end Saturday morning following a forfeit to No. 11 Marcus Blaze in consolations.
At 86 kg, Dieringer put together a solid showing that saw him compete against each of the weight's top-three seeds.
The former Cowboy defeated No. 5 Nick Hall in the quarterfinals before facing top-seeded Aaron Brooks. Dieringer grabbed an early 4-0 lead over the four-time NCAA champion, but ultimately fell to the consolation bracket after an 8-4 defeat. In consolations, Dieringer posted back-to-back wins over No. 10 Evan Wick and No. 2 Chance Marsteller but dropped a tight consolation final to third-seeded Trent Hidlay.
