Gabija Galvydyte Opens 2024 Outdoor Slate with Impressive Mark at Bryan Clay Invitational
April 13, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
AZUSA, Calif. – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field competed coast-to-coast on Friday, with Cowboys and Cowgirls participating at three meets across the country in California, Florida and Oklahoma.
Brian Musau highlighted the day for OSU, breaking the 12-year-old program record in the 5,000 Meters with his time of 13:13.29 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California. Musau and New Mexico's Habtom Samuel traded the lead several times before Samuel looked to regain the lead for good with 200 meters to go, before Musau found a few extra gears in the final 50 meters to take the victory at the line. The freshman's winning time also puts him No. 6 in NCAA history to add to an already impressive resume that includes the No. 5 3K time in NCAA history indoors, a national championship in the Distance Medley Relay and an eighth-place finish at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Earlier in the day, Gabija Galvydyte kicked things off for the Cowgirls in the women's 800 Meter Invite that included many of the top runners in the world. Galvydyte placed sixth overall in an event loaded with professional talent with her time of 2:01.89, which was nearly two seconds better than her previous season-opening best set last year. The defending outdoor Big 12 Champion and NCAA runner-up will double back Saturday for the 1,500 Meters, where she currently ranks second in school history with a personal best of 4:09.48 set at the European Team Championships last June.
In the same event, Kaylie Politza and Cameron McConnell each set new personal bests with times of 2:06.67 and 2:07.71.
Rounding out the night in California was Taylor Roe in the women's 5,000 Meters. Roe competed in the second heat just looking for a regional qualifying mark and ended up taking home the heat win with her time of 15:36.36.
At the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla., Rachel Neaves set a new personal best in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 60.86 meters, which moves her higher on the program all-time list at No. 3.
Over in Florida at the Tom Jones Memorial, Caio Almeida was the lone Cowboy competing today and didn't disappoint. Almeida won his heat in the 400 Meter Hurdles, clocking a time of 50.22, which moves him up to No. 4 on OSU's all-time list.
All three meets wrap up action on Saturday, with the Bryan Clay Invitational being streamed on FloTrack all day and the Tom Jones Memorial appearing on SEC Network + starting at 12:15 p.m. CT
