Cowboys Second After First Session of Big 12 Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up the first session of the 2024 Big 12 Wrestling Championships in second place Saturday morning, advancing seven wrestlers to Saturday night's semifinal round, three to Saturday night's consolation rounds and finishing with a 12-3 overall record in the session.
The Cowboys' 67.5 team points are just three and a half points behind first-place Iowa State.
Top-seeded Daton Fix and No. 2 seeds Dustin Plot and Tagen Jamison added the most to Cowboy tally in the first session, as each wrestler scored two bonus-point wins.
Fix started the tournament strong for the Cowboys by defeating North Dakota State's Fernando Barreto with an 18-3 technical fall at 133 pounds in OSU's first bout of the event, and he followed that with a first-period pin of Wyoming's Garrett Ricks in the quarterfinals.
At 184 pounds, Plott equaled Fix's points by scoring a first-period fall over Oklahoma's Giuseppe Hoose and then dropping seventh-seeded Dennis Robin of West Virginia with an 18-3 technical fall in the quarterfinals.
Jamison's bonus-point win came via another 18-3 technical fall as he beat Kaden Smith of Oklahoma and then knocked off seventh-seeded Haiden Drury of Utah Valley with a 10-0 major decision in the 141-pound bracket.
Four other Cowboys had byes in the preliminary round and advanced to the semifinals with a single decision over a seeded opponent. No. 2 Troy Spratley beat No. 7 Jett Strickenberger of West Virginia at 125 pounds, No. 4 Jordan Williams beat No. 5 Alek Martin of South Dakota State at 149 pounds, No. 4 Izzak Olejnik beat No. 5 Giano Petrucelli of Air Force at 165 pounds and No. 3 Brayden Thompson beat No. 6 Tate Picklo of Oklahoma at 174 pounds.
No. 3 Teague Travis and No. 5 Konner Doucet also won matches at 157 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to reach the quarterfinals, but both dropped tight matches to move into the consolation bracket with No. 7 Luke Surber, who fell in the preliminary round.
