Cowgirl Indoor Track sits Fifth after Day One at NCAA Championships
March 08, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
BOSTON – Oklahoma State men's Distance Medley Relay squad captured their second consecutive NCAA title in the event on Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston.
The Cowboys became the first team to repeat as national champions in the DMR since Oregon did so in 2015 and '16. Unlike last year's dominant three-second victory, Brian Musau (2:54.86), DJ McArthur (45.60), Mehdi Yanouri (1:49.20) and Ryan Schoppe (3:55.59) battled during each leg, with Schoppe ultimately sealing the deal with an incredible kick over the final 100 meters. The DMR is also the second relay in program history to go back-to-back, with the Cowboys also doing so in the two-mile relay in 1965 and '66.
Immediately before the DMR, Alex Maier secured his second straight first team All-America honor in the 5,000 Meters with his time of 13:31.17. Between Maier's three points in the 5K and the DMR's 10 points, the Cowboys sit tied for third in the team race after day one, just five points off the overall lead.
On the women's side, Taylor Roe picked up her third straight individual podium as she took home silver in the women's 5,000 Meters with her time of 15:15.01. Roe went toe-to-toe with Florida's Parker Valby for roughly 3,000 meters before Valby eventually pulled away for the win. Indoors, Roe now has finishes of first (2022, 3,000 Meters), second (2024, 5,000 Meters), third (2023, 3,000 Meters), fourth (2019, DMR) and sixth (2023, DMR) in her storied career in the orange and black. She will wrap up her legendary collegiate career indoors in Saturday's 3,000 Meter final.
Fellow Cowgirl great Molly Born also wrapped up her prestigious indoor career in a Cowgirl uniform with her first first team All-America honor in the 5,000 Meters. Her time of 15:20.89 was a nearly 15-second personal best and earned her a sixth-place finish overall.
Rounding out the scoring for the Cowgirls on day one was the Cowgirl DMR squad of Grace Boone, Tamara Woodley, Maddie Salek and Sivan Auerbach. The Cowgirls placed seventh overall, earning two more points to the team score.
Earlier in the day, Billah Jepkirui (Mile) and Gabija Galvydyte (800 Meters) each punched their tickets to Saturday's finals in their respective events with times of 4:35.56 and 2:02.89, respectively.
Just as the men did earlier Friday, the Cowgirls finish day one with 13 points overall and currently sit fifth in the team race. Four Cowgirls will compete Saturday looking to help secure the program's first-ever track & field with a top-3 finish in the team race.
Saturday's action for OSU begins at 4 p.m. CT with the men's 3,000 Meters. The entirety of the meet is streamed live on ESPN+ starting Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT with the men's Heptathlon. Live results for the meet can be found here.
