All 10 Cowboys Receive Seeds at Big 12 Championships
March 04, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – All 10 Cowboy starters received their seeds for this weekend's Big 12 Wrestling Championships, the conference announced on Monday. Oklahoma State was joined by Missouri as the league's only two teams to have its entire lineup awarded a top-eight seed.
For the fifth time in his career, Daton Fix was named the conference's top seed at 133 pounds. This weekend, Fix and Iowa State's David Carr will be looking to become the first five-time individual champions in Big 12 history. Fix is the conference's only undefeated wrestler at the weight class and OSU's lone No. 1 seed. He will open the tournament against North Dakota State's Fernando Barreto, while No. 8 Garrett Ricks of Wyoming waits for the winner in the quarterfinals.
Three Cowboys were named the No. 2 seed at their respective weights in Troy Spratley, Tagen Jamison and Dustin Plott.
Spratley, who enters the postseason having won nine of his last 11 matches, defeated top-seeded Noah Surtin of Missouri in OSU's dual against the Tigers in early February. After receiving a bye, Spratley will face the winner of No. 7 Jett Strickenberger (WVU) and Tucker Owens (AF). Similarly, Tagen Jamison also defeated Iowa State's Anthony Echemendia earlier this year, who received the top seed at 141 pounds. Jamison will make his postseason debut in a Bedlam rematch with Kaden Smith, who surrendered a 6-3 decision to Jamison back in December. At 184 pounds, Dustin Plott will open his weekend against another familiar opponent in Oklahoma's Giuseppe Hoose, winning by technical fall in each of their two bouts this year. Plott is aiming for his third consecutive Big 12 title and only trails Northern Iowa's Parker Keckeisen in the seeding, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at the weight.
Each making their first appearance the Big 12 Championships, Teague Travis and Brayden Thompson received the third seed at 157 and 174 pounds, respectively. Travis will take on Cal Baptist's Chaz Hallmark, while Thompson awaits the victor of No. 6 Tate Picklo (OU) and Noah Blake (AF).
Jordan Williams and Izzak Olejnik both received byes into the quarterfinals as the No. 4 seed at their weight. Another Cowboy making his postseason debut, Williams will wrestle the winner of No. 5 Alek Martin (SDSU) and Dayne Morton (CBU). After winning back-to-back conference championships at Northern Illinois, Olejnik will take on a loaded 165-pound bracket, which includes four wrestlers ranked in the top-10 nationally. He awaits either No. 5 Giano Petrucelli of Air Force or Northern Colorado's Derek Matthews in the quarterfinal round.
Fifth-seeded Konner Doucet will battle Cal Baptist's Chris Island in his second appearance at the Big 12 Championships. With a win, Doucet would face No. 4 Josh Heindselman of Oklahoma for fifth time in his career, a series split two wins apiece thus far.
Luke Surber rounds out the Cowboy lineup as the No. 7 seed at 197 pounds. Surber will look to recapture his magic from two tournaments ago, when he entered the Big 12 Championships as the seventh-seeded heavyweight but upset his way to a runner-up finish. North Dakota State's Spencer Mooberry will face Surber in the first round, while second-seeded Stephen Buchanan sits in the quarterfinals for another potential Bedlam meeting.
The NCAA released its conference allocations last week and gave the Big 12 a total of 57 automatic bids. The conference received six automatic qualifiers at every weight except for 141, 184 and 285 pounds, which were provided with five bids. Wrestlers who finish within those places at the conference tournament will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, while those who do not must rely on a limited number of at-large spots. Nine of ten Cowboys enter the Big 12 Championships seeded within their number of qualifying spots.
The tournament begins Saturday at 10 a.m. CT with first round and quarterfinal matches, while the semifinals and consolation quarterfinals will begin at 5 p.m. CT later that night. Action will resume the following day at noon CT with the medal matches before concluding with finals matches at 7:30 p.m. CT. Big 12 Now on ESPN+ will stream the first three sessions before the championship round broadcasts on ESPN2.
