Lagat Shines in Cowgirl Outdoor Debut
March 30, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Oklahoma State track & field split up for the first time this outdoor season as three different groups traveled to California, Kansas and Texas for the first tri-meet weekend of the season on Friday.
Out in California at the Stanford Invitational, distance runners stole the show as Adisu Guadie and Denis Kipngetich ran their first 10Ks since leading the Cowboys to their fifth NCAA title in cross country in November. The freshmen pair each dropped new personal bests in the 10,000 Meters, clocking times of 28:10.06 and 28:12.88, respectively.
Their times were also good enough to crack the top-6 on OSU's all-time leaderboard, with Guadie slotting in at fourth and Kipngetich right behind in sixth in school history.
Earlier in the meet, Victoria Lagat competed for the first time outdoors in the orange and black as she took home second in her section of the women's 5,000 Meters with her time of 15:48.95. Her time also puts her fourth in program history behind only Cowgirl national champions Taylor Roe, Christine McMiken and Jackie Goodman. She is also just the fourth Cowgirl to break 16 minutes in the outdoor 5K.
Over at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, the Cowboy quartet of Blake Wynne, DJ McArthur, Caio Almeida and Jordon Smith brought home the fastest time in the prelims of the men's 4x400 Meter Relay, qualifying them for tomorrow's final.
In Kansas at the Shocker Spring Invite hosted by Wichita State, Rachel Neaves and Johnna Orange each cracked the top-5 in the Hammer Throw for the second consecutive weekend with finishes of second and fourth, respectively. Neaves' second-place toss of 58.31 meters was also a season best.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls return to action at all three meets again on Saturday, with competition starting at 11:30 a.m. CT in Kansas, 2:35 p.m. CT in Texas and 3:31 p.m. CT in California.
