PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. – Oklahoma State's men's golf team wrapped up play on Tuesday at the Pauma Valley Invitational with an even-par 284 during its third round to finish in third place at Pauma Valley Country Club.
The Cowboys did produce the event's medalist with Jonas Baumgartner delivering his second career victory. The senior's first triumph came last spring at the Mountaineer Invitational.
Baumgartner was the overnight leader after posting a 66 during his second round to lead by two. After opening with a bogey at the first on Tuesday, he answered with a birdie at the par-5 second to move back to level par. After six consecutive pars, Baumgartner birdied the ninth for an outward side of 1-under 35. He moved to 2-under for the day with a birdie at the 10th before carding a bogey two holes later.
With a birdie at the 16th, Baumgartner held a two-shot lead with two remaining before running into trouble at the 17th where he would card a double bogey to fall into a three-way tie for the lead. However, Baumgartner was clutch at the last, finding the fairway with his drive before hitting a wedge to six feet and converting his birdie putt to return to the winner's circle.
In the team race, Vanderbilt finished at 20-under 832 to post a seven-shot victory. San Diego clipped the Cowboys by a shot, finishing at 13-under 839 at the par-71, 7,311-yard layout. The Cowboys' 12-under total of 840 was four better than Oklahoma.
OSU freshman Preston Stout maintained his position, tying for 12th place at 2-under 211 after signing for a closing 71.
Fifth year Rayhan Thomas also finished inside the top 20, tying for 17th place at 212 after carding a 73 during his closing round.
Senior Bo Jin wrapped up play with a 70 to finish at even-par 213 and tied for 22nd place.
Freshman Gaven Lane's 73 gave him a 221 total and tied him for 58th place.
Sophomore John Wild competed individually at the event, tying for 78th place with his second consecutive 74 putting him at 225.
Freshman Johnnie Clark also competed as an individual and posted his low round of the event on Tuesday, a 73, to finish in 80th place at 230.
