TRINITY, Texas – Oklahoma State freshman Preston Stout became the 11th Cowboy golfer to capture Big 12 Championship medalist honors with a clutch performance at the 72nd hole on Wednesday at Whispering Pines Golf Club.
Stout fired a 67 during Tuesday's third round to get within two shots of the lead held by Cincinnati's Ty Gingerich heading into the final round. Gingerich closed with a 67, while Gustav Frimodt of TCU finished with a 68 to take the clubhouse lead at 9-under 279.
The Cowboy freshman birdied his opening hole and added another at the seventh to get to 8-under as he made the turn. After reeling off eight consecutive pars on his second nine, Stout came to the last needing birdie to share medalist honors. After his approach found the left side of the green, he drained a 35-foot putt to card a closing 69 and make it three players at 279.
With his first career triumph, Stout joins Leif Westerberg (1997), Charles Howell (2000), Anders Hultman (2002), Hunter Mahan (2003), Pablo Martin (2007), Rickie Fowler (2008), Morgan Hoffmann (2009, 2011), Stratton Nolen (2016) and Kristoffer Ventura (2018) as OSU victors at the event.
Additionally, Stout becomes the third Cowboy freshman to claim Big 12 medalist honors, joining Fowler (2008) and Hoffmann (2009).
In the team race, Texas pulled away from the field, finishing at 25-under 1,127. Oklahoma was second at the par-72, 7,434-yard layout with its 1,145 total, while the Cowboys were third at 1,150.
Fifth year Rayhan Thomas posted a closing 71 to finish at 3-over 291 and tied for 23rd place.
Senior Jonas Baumgartner posted a 74, while freshman Gaven Lane signed for a 73 to each finish at 294 and tied for 34th place.
Senior Bo Jin's 76 tied him for 46th place at 300.
