Five Cowboys Receive Top-10 Seeds at NCAA Championships
March 13, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Five Cowboy wrestlers received top-10 seeds at their respective weights ahead of the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships, the NCAA announced Wednesday in its release of the tournament's seedings and brackets.
With all 10 starters earning a qualifying spot at the Big 12 Championships last weekend, Oklahoma State will send its full lineup to the event for the second straight year. Missouri and Virginia Tech join the Pokes as the only three teams in the country to achieve that feat. Additionally, Oklahoma State's five wrestlers seeded in the top-10 is its most since 2019 when it had six.
After compiling a perfect 17-0 record this season, Daton Fix earned the top seed at 133 pounds for the third time in his career. Fix was the No. 1 seed in both 2019 and 2021 before moving to the second seed in each of the past two seasons.
On Sunday, Fix became the first five-time champion in Big 12 history after running through the 133-pound field. The Sand Springs native enters his final NCAA Championship having earned bonus points in 11 of his 17 wins, including an 11-3 major decision over third-seeded Kai Orine of NC State on January 5.
Dustin Plott, Troy Spratley, Izzak Olejnik and Tagen Jamison all joined Fix with a top-10 seed in their respective bracket.
Holding an impressive 27-3 record, Plott was awarded the third seed in his first season at 184 pounds. Plott posted a team-leading 21 bonus-point wins throughout the year and made it to the Big 12 finals on Sunday, but came up just short of his third-straight conference championship with a loss to top-seeded Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa. The senior will be looking to improve upon his back-to-back sixth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships.
Spratley will enter his first NCAA Championships as the No. 6 seed at 125 pounds. The redshirt freshman had a stellar first season in Stillwater, going 21-6 while beating multiple top-seeded wrestlers, such as No. 2 Luke Stanich of Lehigh, No. 7 Jakob Camacho of NC State and No. 8 Richard Figueroa of Arizona State. Spratley made a run to the Big 12 finals last weekend before falling to fifth-seeded Jore Volk of Wyoming.
Olejnik has put together a 24-5 record in his lone season as a Cowboy en route to the seventh seed at 165 pounds. He recently placed third at the Big 12 Championships and won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in early December against a field that included four of the other top-10 NCAA seeds. Last season, Olejnik finished eighth at the NCAA Championships to become an All-American at Northern Illinois.
Jamison earned the No. 10 seed at 141 pounds following a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships over the weekend. Like Spratley, Jamison is a redshirt freshman and went 21-8 in his first campaign as a Cowboy, highlighted by wins over No. 5 Anthony Echemendia of Iowa State, No. 8 Sergio Lemley of Michigan and No. 9 Brock Hardy of Nebraska.
Konner Doucet, Teague Travis and Jordan Williams all landed inside the top-20, with Doucet placing the highest among the group at No. 12. Doucet wrestled to a 19-9 record this season and returns to the NCAA Championships for a second time. He will open the event in a rematch against No. 21 Dayton Pitzer of Pittsburgh, who he beat by decision, 3-0, on January 12.
Travis, the No. 16 seed at 157 pounds, is also set for a rematch in the first round against No. 17 Brock Mauller of Missouri, defeating then-No. 10 Mauller by decision in the Cowboys' dual victory over the Tigers on February 4. Travis will be making his first appearance at the NCAA Championships after going 21-6 this season. Meanwhile, Williams received the No. 20 seed at 149 pounds following his runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships last weekend. Williams posted a 15-7 record in his first season in the Cowboy lineup.
Brayden Thompson and Luke Surber round out the Cowboy lineup as the No. 25 and No. 27 seeds at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively. Thompson, a true freshman, has shown high upside throughout his 12-9 season, including his third-place finish last weekend at the Big 12 Championships. Surber will be making his third straight appearance at the NCAA Championships with a 13-7 record after battling through injuries for much of the season. He secured his spot in the field with a sixth-place finish at Big 12s on Sunday.
The NCAA Wrestling Championships will begin competition on Thursday, March 21, with two sessions per day through Saturday. The morning sessions will be televised on ESPNU, with the evening sessions airing on ESPN.
