Cowgirls Claim Third at Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma State men's indoor track & field collected it's second straight runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships scoring 92 points, with the Cowgirls taking home third overall with a score of 103.5.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls crowned five individual champions on Saturday in addition to the pair on Friday, giving OSU seven champs on the weekend. Billah Jepkirui (4:37.16) and Ryan Schoppe (4:02.73) gave OSU a second consecutive sweep of the Mile as Jepkirui and Fouad Messaoudi did so last year. Sivan Auerbach (2:46.85) returned to the top step of the podium in the women's 1,000 Meters for the first time in three years and Alex Maier (7:55.45) won the 3,000 Meters for the third consecutive season, breaking the facility record in the process. In the field, freshman Winny Bii (13.66m) took gold in the women's Triple Jump for her first career title.
In addition to the seven Big 12 champions crowned this weekend, five school records fell as Tamara Woodley (1:19.41) and DJ McArthur (1:07.88) each placed second in the 600 Yards. Gabija Galvydyte (2:01.07) shattered her own school record and broke the Lithuanian national record in the 800 Meters as she also took home second. Philip Frank broke a pair of school record in the 60 Meter Hurdles (8.11) and the Heptathlon (5,687 points) on his way to a second-place finish in the Hep.
On the men's side, a majority of the points came in the distance events as the Cowboys scored double digits in the 600 Yards (15 points), 1,000 Meters (11), Mile (16), 3,000 Meters (10) and the Distance Medley Relay (10). The 92 points scored by the Cowboys is the sixth-most in program history, with each of the top 5 scores coming under the direction of Dave Smith.
For the Cowgirls, the 103.5 points scored is the fourth-most in program history as they stacked up the points in the 5K (23), 1K (17), 600 Yards (12), 800 Meters (12), Mile (11) and Triple Jump (10). The OSU women came up just short of their third-ever second-place finish, scoring just .5 points less than Texas Tech.
Up next, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will travel back to Boston to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the TRACK at New Balance March 8-9. Tickets for the championships can be purchased here.
