Cowgirl Softball bests Yale in a run-rule victory, 10-1

TAMPA, Fla. – A six-run fifth inning powered the Oklahoma State softball team to a 10-1 run-rule victory over Yale at the USF Softball Field as part of the South Florida Showdown Friday.

With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 11-2. Yale fell to 0-2.

Freshman Karli Godwin had five runs batted in for OSU, with Tallen Edwards scoring three times and Caroline Wang going 2-for-3 with a home run. Godwin, Wang and Claire Timm each had two hits, with Edwards and Timm scoring three runs apiece.

Edwards led off the game with a walk to extend her on-base streak to 13 games and after Timm's bunt resulted in two errors from the Bulldogs, Edwards came around to score the game's opening run. Timm advanced to third on the play and scored after Godwin hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0.

A two-RBI single from Godwin in the second extended OSU's lead to 4-0.

The Bulldogs managed to plate one run in the third inning, but Megan Bloodworth threw out a runner at the plate on the same play to limit the damage and keep the score at 4-1.

The Cowgirls responded in the fifth inning with Wang's home run, her fourth of the year, and a pinch hit double from Lexi Kilfoyl that extended the advantage to 6-1.

After an hour and 20 minute rain delay, OSU scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game in run-rule fashion.

Katie Kutz (2-0) earned the win in the circle, allowing only three hits and striking out four.

The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT against Pittsburgh and again at 10:30 a.m. CT against Loyola Chicago in the South Florida Showdown.
