Six Cowboys Win Titles at Michigan State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Oklahoma State had an impressive showing at the Michigan State Open on Saturday as all 13 wrestlers placed and six won titles across two divisions.
Nine Cowboys were registered in the open division while four others competed in the freshman/sophomore brackets, all combining for a 51-12 record and 29 bonus-point wins on the day. One of the largest early-season tournaments on the NCAA calendar, the Michigan State Open featured representatives from 18 Division I programs and ranked competitors at nearly every weight class.
Ranked 14th at 141 pounds, Tagen Jamison had a strong start to his redshirt sophomore campaign with bonus points in all four of his wins en route to the title. Prior to his first-period pin in the finals match, Jamison had outscored his opponents 43-10. Another returning starter, Konner Doucet also went undefeated at heavyweight and captured his first ranked win of the season with a 2-0 decision over No. 28 Jordan Greer of Ohio in the championship.
True freshman Cody Merrill began his college career on a high note after picking up four wins and 197-pound title. His finals match came against 24th-ranked Evan Bates of Northwestern, which saw Merrill get a takedown in the final minute to secure the 4-2 victory.
Redshirt freshmen Cael Hughes and Jersey Robb also came away with titles at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively. Robb defeated No. 33 Jared McGill of Edinboro in the semifinals, as Hughes showed no signs of rust in his first appearance 133 pounds since November 18, 2023.
In the freshman/sophomore division, JJ McComas ran through the field for the 133-pound championship. Kolter Burton reached the finals at 141 pounds as well, but ultimately came up short in a wild 16-11 match.
The Cowboys officially open the 2024-25 season next weekend with road duals at Utah Valley and Oregon State before returning home to face Wyoming on November 22.
