Cowgirl Soccer Earns NCAA Championship Bid
November 11, 2024 | Cowgirl Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS – Oklahoma State has been awarded an at-large bid to the field of 64 for the 2024 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
OSU is 14-4-3 on the season and will face Arkansas in a first-round match Friday in Fayetteville, Ark., at 6:30 p.m. The Razorbacks are a No. 2 national seed and bring a 14-2-2 record into the NCAA tourney.
"I love the moment for the kids," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "I just love watching their reaction… They got a little nervous. It's always cool when you see your own name come off. That never gets old. Very cool."
This marks the 14th NCAA Tournament bid in OSU program history and the first since 2020 when the Cowgirls advanced to the Sweet 16.
"It means a ton," Carmichael said. "I feel really great for these seniors, the fourth and fifth years and the transfer kids – this is why they want to play at Oklahoma State. I think for two of the last three years we've been one of the last teams left out, and that hurts. That gets to you. And so this year, we wanted to make sure we weren't in that position. And we felt, obviously, really good going into it, that we were in. So it means a lot.
"It's where this program wants to be. These are the type of games you want to play in."
OSU's NCAA tourney berth is its 13th in the last 19 seasons dating back to 2006. The Cowgirls' first NCAA appearance came in 2003, and they made six consecutive trips from 2006-11 and back-to-back appearances in 2013-14, 2016-17 and 2019-20.
The Cowgirls are 11-9-6 all time at the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship and have advanced past the first round eight times. They made back-to-back quarterfinals (Elite Eight) appearances in 2010 and 2011.
OSU is 5-2-0 all time against Arkansas. The Cowgirls won the first five meetings in the series (1997, 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2011), but the Razorbacks have been victorious in the previous two. The last meeting came in 2014 in Fayetteville with Arkansas winning, 2-1.
