Avery's second-half surge helps Cowboys turn back St. Thomas

STILLWATER -- Marchelus "Chi Chi" Avery scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half of Oklahoma State's 80-71 victory over St. Thomas on Sunday after at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowboys (2-0) thwarted St. Thomas' efforts to slow the pace by forcing 20 turnovers and outscoring the visitors 26-8 on fast break opportunities.
Patrick Suemnick and Bryce Thompson scored 11 points each for OSU, and the team's smallest player, Arturo Dean, stuffed the box score with nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Kendall Blue finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Tommies (2-1), who made 15 of 36 three-pointers but just 10-of-26 from inside the arc, including 6-of-18 layups.
Suemnick's dunk capped a 9-0 run that gave the Cowboys a 28-18 advantage with 3:08 to play in the first half. They led 33-23 at halftime and by as many as 17 midway through the second half.
OSU reserves combined to score 49 of the 80 Cowboy points, led by Avery's 23. He made all six of his field goal attempts after halftime and 9-of-12 overall.He
