January 03, 2024 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's women's tennis team came in at No. 6 in the ITA preseason rankings and atop the Big 12 preseason poll with both being released on Wednesday.
The No. 6 ITA ranking was the highest preseason ranking in program history, and the Cowgirls were selected to finish atop the Big 12 for the first time since 2017.
Oklahoma State enters 2024 coming off 16-8 season in which it collected first-round wins at both the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA Tournament. The Cowgirls also added one of the top transfer classes in the country last summer, pairing it with a strong group of returners.
OSU ranked the highest among Big 12 teams in the ITA rankings, as Texas came in at No. 7 and Oklahoma at No. 13.
In the Big 12 poll, as voted on by the head coaches of each conference team, the Cowgirls received 161 points and eight first place votes.
A handful of Cowgirls were recognized in the ITA individual rankings following a historic fall season. Iowa State transfer Ange Oby Kajuru ranked second in the singles rankings, making her the highest-ranked player in Oklahoma State program history.
LSU transfer Anastasiya Komar came in at No. 13, while returners Lucia Peyre (No. 53) and Ayumi Miyamoto (No. 60) also appeared in the rankings. LSU transfer Safiya Carrington rounded out the Cowgirls in the singles poll, slotting in at No. 62.
In the ITA individual doubles rankings, the team of Kajuru and Komar was ranked sixth while Raquel Gonzalez and Komar were ranked No. 12.
Oklahoma State will open its season Jan. 12-14 at the Freeman Memorial Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, before returning home to host No. 5 Michigan and No. 14 Ohio State on Jan. 19 and 21.
