STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 22 Northern Iowa, 22-12, for its fifth-straight win over a ranked opponent Friday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big 12, while Northern Iowa fell to 3-5.
The Cowboys won six of 10 matches on the night and were able to separate the score behind a trio of bonus-point wins from Daton Fix, Jordan Williams and Izzak Olejnik. Oklahoma State is now 7-0 against ranked opponents this season and 14-1 in their last 15 duals overall. With the win, head coach John Smith now trails Harold Nichols by just seven victories at 485 for second-most in Division I wrestling history.
"I thought our young guys competed," coach Smith said. "It's slowed down for them a bit. At 125, we got the first takedown, so we have to keep working to score after that. Daton (Fix) did a great job of scoring for us, knowing this could be a tough match. Jordan Williams did well, and it was exactly what we wanted to see… Good win for Konner (Doucet) after losing to (Tyrell Gordon) twice before. Little bit slow, but you're going to see some of that this time of year."
In a rematch from December's Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Troy Spratley opened the night with a tight 3-2 decision over No. 30 Trever Andersen. A takedown in the first period by Spratley was ultimately enough to earn him his fifth ranked win of the season. Daton Fix then extended the Cowboys' lead with an 18-4 major decision against No. 23 Julian Farber, marking his fifth-straight match earning bonus points.
After missing each of Oklahoma State's past three duals, Jordan Williams was inserted back into the lineup at 149 pounds and put together a dominant 20-5 technical fall over Adam Allard. Williams' big win was much-needed, as the Cowboys dropped tight, ranked matchups at 141 and 157 pounds.
Izzak Olejnik improved to 18-1 on the season following his 12-2 major decision against RJ Weston at 165 pounds. The senior has responded well to his lone loss at West Virginia, securing bonus points in back-to-back matches. Brayden Thompson then added to the Cowboy lead at 174 pounds, defeating No. 30 Jared Simma, 6-3. The true freshman is now 4-1 against ranked opponents and has won seven of his last eight matches.
In a top-ranked battle at 184 pounds, Dustin Plott fell to No. 1 Parker Keckeisen, 12-6. Plott worked for a takedown early in the third period to claim a 5-4 lead, but UNI's returning national finalist closed the bout with a pair of takedowns to earn the win.
True freshman Jersey Robb made his Gallagher-Iba Arena debut at 197 pounds before Konner Doucet battled No. 15 Tyrell Gordon in the heavyweight match. Doucet fell to Gordon twice last season, but was not denied in his home arena, picking up a 4-3 decision in tiebreakers. The Comanche native has won seven consecutive matches, five coming against opponents ranked in the top-16.
The Cowboys, who are looking to match their longest winning streak to open a season since 2019, will host fourth-ranked Iowa State tomorrow night at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The dual is slated for 6 p.m. and will be available for streaming on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
