Cowboys suffer cold night in Ames
January 13, 2024 | Cowboy Basketball
AMES, Iowa – Getting to Ames wasn't easy. Neither was facing Iowa State's elite defense.
Following a 24-hour series of travel delays tied to winter weather and sub-zero temperatures, Oklahoma State struggled to get much going Saturday night against the Cyclones, falling 66-42 at Hilton Coliseum.
Eric Dailey Jr. scored 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting for the Cowboys (8-8, 0-3 Big 12), who made it into town just three hours before game time.
Heavy snow shut down airports on Friday and the team's Saturday morning charter flight was called off due to mechanical issues. The Cowboys instead took a different plane into Des Moines on Saturday afternoon and bussed the snow-covered roads to Ames. Tipoff was pushed back from 5 to 7 p.m.
Tamin Lipsey scored a game-high 17 points for Iowa State (13-3, 2-1) which improved to 11-0 at home this year and has a strong case for an AP top-25 rankings after knocking No. 2 Houston earlier in the week.
The Cyclones – No. 3 in KenPom's defensive efficiency rankings coming in – held the Cowboys to season-lows for points (41) and field goal percentage (.319) and forced 20 turnovers.
OSU jumped to leads of 12-6 and 15-10 near the 12:00-mark of the first half before missing nine of its next 10 shots.
ISU (13-3, 2-1) scored the next 12 points in what quickly snowballed into a 23-5 run.
Down 37-26 at halftime, the Cowboys fell further behind after hitting just 5-of-22 second-half shots.
Brandon Garrison grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, Quion Williams recorded three steals and Javon Small and Jarius Hicklen each made a pair of threes.
Senior guard Bryce Thompson scored seven points and needs just 14 more to reach 1,000 for his four-year collegiate career.
The Cowboys are back in action Tuesday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena against the Kansas Jayhawks. Tipoff is 8 p.m. CT and the game will air on ESPN.
