Series History: Cowboys Look To Take Series Lead Against Arizona State
September 08, 2023 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – For the first time in the Mike Gundy era, the Oklahoma State Cowboys head to Tempe versus the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday.
The Cowboys look to take a 3-2 series lead over the Sun Devils in the non-conference matchup.
OSU knotted the head-to-head series, 2-2, last season – defeating ASU 34-17 at Boone Pickens Stadium. Highlighted by a 17-point second quarter, the Cowboys took the contest behind 268 passing yards and 54 yards on the ground from Spencer Sanders, who racked up three touchdowns in the process.
The Cowboys kept the aggression on the defensive front, wrangling up eight tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble recovered by Tyler Lacy. Brock Martin was credited for the second-quarter strip, posting the first forced fumble of his career.
Oklahoma State heads to Tempe for the third time in series history and its first time since 1993, losing 12-10.
Pat Jones made his head coaching debut for the Cowboys in their inaugural 1984 meeting, taking down the then 12th-ranked Sun Devils, 45-3. This game kickstarted a 10-2 season for OSU, stamped by a Gator Bowl victory and top-10 finishes in the AP (No. 7) and Coaches (No. 5) poll.
In the series' fifth rendition, the Cowboys hope to improve to 2-0 on the year following a 27-13 victory over Central Arkansas last week, while the Sun Devils took down Southern Utah 24-21. Play is slated for Saturday at 9:30 p.m. CT and will air on FS1 with Alex Faust and Petros Papadakis on the call.
