Return of Roberson: New and Improved
September 21, 2023 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Jeff Roberson has rejoined the Oklahoma State Cowboy football team this season after suffering a season-ending injury in 2022 that kept him from suiting up the entire year.
Though unfortunate, it's not uncommon for athletes at all levels to experience that kind of set back, and Roberson is one of many collegiate athletes to have a season taken from them.
From his experience though, there is strength, and from that strength there is growth.
"It's just one of those things that tells you who you are as a man," Roberson said. "You've got to come together and be like, 'alright, this is what it is.'"
While Roberson, a redshirt-junior linebacker, spent the 2022 season on the sideline, it didn't stop him from staying productive. Despite the difficulties of not being able to play the game he loves, Roberson took it as an opportunity to learn.
"I can work on the other things outside of football," Roberson said. "I can focus on the game of football, on watching film and learning the ins and outs of football."
Throughout his Cowboy career, Roberson had primarily made appearances on special teams. He executed his role well in his limited playing experience, and that role is expanding this season now that he's healthy again.
Back in his Cowboy uniform, Roberson has returned to the field and appeared in all three games for the orange and black. In his first game back against Central Arkansas, Roberson put up two solo tackles. He's also branched into a role on defense, rotating in at linebacker.
At four tackles on the season thus far, he's already matched his career high in terms of production for a season. With his role increased and his return to the field complete, Roberson said he's been able to recall the feeling of playing college football.
"It's awesome to be out there and play in front of the fans, play ball, play fast and run around," Roberson said. "It's been a long time and it's fun."
OSU is headed Ames, Iowa, to open conference play against the Iowa State Cyclones. ISU sits at 1-2 overall, but Roberson has overstated the importance of not underestimating opponents, particularly conference foes.
"Obviously, they're a good football team," Roberson said. "We respect every opponent we play. They've got some good tight ends, a good (offensive) line, good quarterback. We're going to have to come play some ball. Watch film on them and then get the week rolling."
Roberson and the Cowboys are set to kickoff against the Cyclones at 3 p.m. CT this Saturday. The game will be televised live on FS1.
