Postgame Quotes - OSU vs. South Alabama
September 16, 2023 | Cowboy Football
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy
Opening statement:
"We didn't do a very good job of coaching and certainly didn't do a very good job of executing. We lost the turnover battle. We had way too many penalties. We couldn't rush the ball well enough to amount to anything. We've got to do a better job of protecting the quarterbacks and giving those guys a chance to function. From being on the sideline, it looked really difficult for them. On the defensive side, we gave up a few easy third down conversions where we didn't get cover down. We've got to stop the run. We came in worried too much about them throwing the ball, which is really what they had done. They got us running the ball. We have to stop the run first. Then rally back and deal with the pass. We got outcoached and outexecuted."Â
On how to rally the team after a tough loss:Â
"I told the team that we'll come in tomorrow, we'll grade it and look at it. We'll be critical on ourselves and the players. Everybody has to own it. We've got to get through it. It's extremely difficult when you don't play well. We get to Monday, and we've got to get ready to play the next game, can't do anything about the last game except learn from it and move forward."Â
On necessary improvements to the offensive line:Â
"There's some different things we can do protection-wise. First, we have to identify how it happened, the integral part of the different protections. Find what's causing it and try to stay away from that. Then, function and run concepts that we think we're good at based on who we are… There's answers, we just have to get to them."
Â
On working toward limiting dropped plays:Â
"Keep working on catching the ball. We had things rolling, then we dropped a pass. We had things rolling, then we had a penalty. Couple times we had things rolling and bobbled a pass. What I told the team is there is enough to the share. It looked like every time it was something. The coaches are just as responsible. We've got to do a better job; they've got to do a better job executing."Â
On tackling:Â
"One of the bright things is I thought we tackled better. Some of the tackling took place too far down the field, but I didn't see them miss a lot of tackles. We did improve in that area."Â
Â
On approaching conference play:Â
"It's going to get more competitive every week as we go through. I want to put this game to rest, and we have to make sure we can stop the run. We have to continue to be able to rush the ball so we can have a balanced offense. I know that sounds simple, but that will really help a lot."Â
Â
Oklahoma State running back Jaden Nixon
On the running game:
"It hasn't been working out as much as we'd like lately, but I mean, we just can't give up on it completely."
Â
On looking ahead:
"We're going to take that loss tonight, but next week, we're coming back on fire."
 Â
South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack
On the offense:
"We were able to establish a run early, gave us some one-on-one shots. We liked some matchups against a couple of their DBs, and we were able to get those matchups early."Â
Â
On his team's physicality:
"That was probably the one thing, just looking at it we knew we were a more physical team coming in, but we had to establish it early. And certainly we did. That was a physically dominating win from the word go."
Â
On the team's mindset going into a big atmosphere and game:Â
"This is a young program, and we haven't been in big moments. When we played against Tulane, I thought at times the moment overwhelmed us... we have to go through some of those growing pains as a young program to go into those big moments."
Â
On the message to his players:
"Knowing if you go do your job, you are going to eliminate some of that crowd noise if you stay on top. Then on top of it just knowing that we are capable of competing in these moments."
Â
South Alabama wide receiver Caullin Lacy
On the win
"It means a lot to us, gives us a lot of attention, a lot of noise, and we just have to keep that momentum going throughout the season. That was the plan."
Â
South Alabama running back La'Damien Webb
On getting more touches tonight:
"I feel great, it is a great opportunity for me. Any opportunity to help my team I am going to take. Anything I can do to put this team in a better position to win, I am going to do it. With this win we are going to get more support."Â
Â
South Alabama linebacker Trey Kiser
On if there was a moment he knew they were going to win:
"I'd probably say the second or third series when they couldn't even pass the 50-yard line. It was ridiculous seeing our defense. The plays we saw in practice we saw tonight, and it was like slow motion when they ran them."
Â
On OSU's QB situation:Â
"You have to have a quarterback that can get in a rhythm with your offense and can be trusted. I feel like they are having problems finding that guy that can be trusted. As a defense we take advantage of that lack of rhythm. (Gundy) got us on high alert because of his ability to run, but (Bowman) really started slow."
