Christian Carroll Looks for Gold at U20 World Championships
August 13, 2023 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Incoming Oklahoma State wrestler Christian Carroll will represent the stars and stripes as he competes for the United States World Team at the U20 World Championships this week in Amman, Jordan.
The No. 1 pound-for-pound prospect of 2023 claimed his spot in Jordan with a dominant victory at the World Team Trials in early June. There, Carroll received a bye into the best-of-three final series already secured thanks to his U20 National Title in April. He made quick work of seventh-seeded Aden Attao in the series, winning both bouts by a score of 10-0, with the second victory coming in just 17 seconds.
Carroll goes for gold in a loaded 125 kg freestyle division, headlined by defending champion Amirreza Masoumi of Iran. The field also includes Azerbaijan's Yusif Dursunov, who won a gold medal at the U17 World Championship just last week, as well as U20 European champion Hakan Buyukcingil of Turkey, U23 European silver medalist Volodymyr Kochanov of Ukraine and U20 Pan-Am champ Karanveer Mahil of Canada.
Carroll will look to get off to a hot start against Poland's Ksawery Kaminski in his first match of the week.
In 2022, Iran captured the team title, finishing just ahead of the United States in second. Carroll, along with his fellow countrymen, will look to displace the Iranians for the top spot.
The U20 World Championships span from August 14-20, but the 125 kg bracket will not begin until Tuesday at 2 a.m. CT with the qualification rounds, which is followed by the semifinals at 8:45 a.m. CT. On Wednesday, repechage is set for 2 a.m. CT, while the medal matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
Fans can follow Carroll throughout the week with streaming options, brackets and live results available on FloWrestling.org.
