Bracket set for 2023 Legends Classic
August 10, 2023 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State will face St. Bonaventure in the semifinal round of the 2023 Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper. Auburn and Notre Dame make up the other half of the four-team bracket, released this morning.
Â
The tournament takes place Thursday and Friday, Nov. 16-17, at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. and tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster.com.
Â
The Thursday semifinal doubleheader tip off at 5:30 p.m. CT (6:30 p.m. ET), though the order of games and television assignments have yet to be determined. Friday's third-place matchup gets underway at 3:30 p.m. CT (4:30 p.m. ET) followed immediately after by the championship game.
Â
This will be OSU's first-ever meeting with St. Bonaventure, a first-time Legends Classic invitee and a perennial Atlantic 10 contender under head coach Mark Schmidt. The Bonnies (14-18, 8-10 last year) secured the A-10 title and an NCAA tournament berth in 2021 and advanced to the 2022 NIT semifinals.
Â
The Notre Dame-Auburn semifinal will be a clash of past Legends Classic champions. The Fighting Irish won the title in 2016 and Auburn took the 2019 crown.
Â
Notre Dame is the only one of ACC's 15 active men's basketball members that OSU has never faced. The Irish (11-21, 3-17 ACC) are in their first year under former Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry.
Â
Auburn (21-13) reached the second round of last year's NCAA tournament as a No. 9 seed. The Cowboys last faced the Tigers during the 2015-16 season as part of the Big 12-SEC Challenge, winning 74-63 on the road. The schools have split four series meetings all-time.
Â
OSU (20-16, NIT quarterfinals) took third in the 2017 Legends Classic, defeating Pittsburgh on the final day. The Cowboys have fresh energy heading into 2023-24 with nine scholarship newcomers. Senior guards Bryce Thompson and John-Michael Wright are joined by a top-10 freshman recruiting class and several talented transfers.
