Cowboy Trio Travels Overseas for Poland Open
July 28, 2023 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Three Oklahoma State wrestlers will compete on the world stage this weekend, as Daton Fix, Dustin Plott and Brayden Thompson represent the United States at the Ziolkowski, Pytlasinski, Poland Open.
All three Cowboys will wrestle in the Men's Freestyle division, which begins Saturday morning. The Cowboy trio, along with competitors from all over the world, head to Warsaw, Poland looking to claim first-place gold medals.
Checking in at 61 kg, Fix is one of just three United States Senior National Team members registered for this weekend's event.
Last month, Fix earned his spot on the team with a 9-0 shutout victory over Austin DeSanto in the 61 kg true third match. DeSanto will join Fix in Warsaw this weekend, along with Nashton Garrett, who wrestled with the other two at the Senior World Team Trials in May.
Plott has also had a successful summer thus far, winning his second consecutive U23 Freestyle National Championship to clinch his spot on the Team USA U23 World Team in June. There, the rising senior compiled a perfect 7-0 record with three shutout victories. Plott will compete at 79 kg again this weekend.
Thompson rounds out the Cowboy trio, going for gold at 86 kg. Like Plott, the incoming freshman had a strong showing at the U20 World Team Trials in June, reaching the best-of-three final series before finishing as runner-up.
In April, Thompson also impressed with a third-place finish at the UWW U20 National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Poland Open began July 26 with the Greco-Roman competition, but the Men's Freestyle division won't begin until Saturday, July 29. The 86 kg, 92 kg, 97 kg and 125 kg weight class competitions will commence Saturday, while the 57 kg, 61 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, 74 kg and 79 kg divisions are scheduled for Sunday.
Fans can follow the Cowboys throughout the weekend with brackets, live results and live streams available here.
