STILLWATER, Okla. – Four Oklahoma State student-athletes recently attended the Black Student-Athlete Summit in Los Angeles, with Johnna Orange, John Michael Wright, Ty Williams and Addison Roberts all participating in the four-day event.
"Giving OSU student-athletes the opportunity to grow their professional skillset is the most important experience we can give them," OSU Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Leadership and Development Jawauna Harding said.
"Through the summit, our student-athletes were able to practice their networking and build future career connections, while also connecting with other student-athletes from across the nation."
The summit provides student-athletes with the opportunity to learn about research and leadership as well as career and professional development.
The Big 12 Conference held a networking event at Luck Strike Live as well.
"I think it will help me as a team leader because this event gave strategies and tools to help best communicate with different types of people. I learned how to best navigate my mental health, how to promote myself and create a better influence as an athlete," Orange said.
Among the many benefits the summit provides is the opportunity for student-athletes to learn how to leverage their athletic ability for long-term success in the business world and socially as well.
While providing the opportunity to connect with a wide range of professionals, the summit allows its participants to be a part of a career combine, pro day and corporate recruiting fair.
"I learned the power of networking. A lot of job opportunities were presented at the summit because one person knew the other and a door was opened. Network, network, network," Wright said.
Additionally, the student-athletes leave the event with proven ways to impact their respective campuses.
