Cowgirl track & field student-athlete Sanye Ford has ended her senior season – and her career – early. On April 24 she'll be donating a kidney to her mom.
It's been almost a year and a half since Ford's mom was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. There have been countless hospital visits, endless tests, and never-ending days waiting for the call saying they found a match.
Get to know this remarkable representative of Oklahoma State, Sanye Ford, and her "no brainer" decision to go through the donation process to save her best friend, her mom, on the latest episode of the Pokes Pod.
Quotes from the conversation
What made you want to go through this donation process?
My mom's my best friend. So when she first told us how sick she was and that she needed a kidney, it was a no-brainer to me. Didn't even have to think about it for a second. Once she said that, I was signing up to get tested to see if I could donate.
When did (your family) tell you?
My mom waited to tell me because she knew I would take it pretty hard. It was a few weeks (after she left the hospital) that it was stage 4 kidney disease and would eventually need dialysis or a transplant.
What did your mom say to you when you agreed to go through all of this?
She was pretty adamant at first that she didn't want me to do it. She just felt that I was so young and that she didn't want me to give up track and give up my senior year to do this. I think she still has a little bit of guilt but I tell her every day there's no reason to feel bad because there was nothing she was going to do to stop me.
