Cowgirls Claim Series Win Over No. 5/6 Florida State With Comeback Victory
March 12, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The No. 3 Oklahoma State softball team used a three-run sixth inning to propel it to 3-2 comeback victory against No. 5/6 Florida State to clinch the series Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.
With the win, OSU improved to 20-2 and FSU fell to 21-5.
It was a pitcher's duel through the early innings of Sunday's game. OSU went with Lexi Kilfoyl to start, who improved to 5-1 on the year. The senior righty allowed only two hits and struck out seven Seminoles' batters.
Florida State was first to score, grabbing the lead in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice from Florida State's Michaela Edenfield.
Florida State's starter in the circle, Ali DuBois, kept the Cowgirls scoreless through her 3.0 innings pitched. In the fourth, Kathryn Sandercock entered in for relief; it was then the Cowgirl were able to piece hits together to put runs on the board.
After four consecutive scoreless innings, back-to-back singles opened the sixth for OSU, as Tallen Edwards and Kiley Naomi each tabbed a base hit. An RBI groundout from Micaela Wark brought home Edwards, putting OSU on the board and tying the game.
Katelynn Carwile's RBI double was the game's defining moment, as she brought home Naomi to give the Cowgirls their first lead of the game. Another RBI single, this time from Chyenne Factor, scored Carwile to give OSU a two-run lead heading into the seventh.
Two base hits in the seventh inning from FSU forced OSU to make a pitching change, as All-American Kelly Maxwell was called from the bullpen to get the final three outs. After an RBI single cut the deficit to one, Maxwell and the Cowgirls defense shut it down to secure the 3-2 comeback victory; Maxwell earned her second save of the season in process.
The Cowgirls return to action at 6 p.m. CT Wednesday, March 15, for a matchup against Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. The game can be heard on The Varsity Network.
