Cowgirl Softball Walks Off Against No. 8/9 Virginia Tech
February 17, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
Clearwater, Fla. – In a game that featured a combined eight home runs by the two teams, a walk-off double by freshman Katie Lott propelled the No. 5 Oklahoma State softball team to a 10-9 win over No. 8 Virginia Tech Friday.
With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 6-1 and the Hokies fell to 5-1.
"A really good softball game between two top teams," OSU coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Two teams that definitely have a chance to be there at the very end, so we're very proud of that. It was a good victory for Oklahoma State, I thought our kids showed what we're about, and that's a lot of fight, really tough."
Virginia Tech got on the board with a pair of runs off OSU starter Lexi Kilfoyl in the second inning, but a two-run shot from Cowgirl freshman Micaela Wark in the bottom half of the inning immediately deadlocked the score at two. It was the first home run of Wark's collegiate career and headlined a 3-for-4 day at the plate for the Kansas transfer.
The two teams traded runs again in the third, with Hokie right fielder Addy Green hitting a solo home run in the top half of the inning, only to see OSU shortstop Kiley Naomi even the score with a solo bomb of her own in the bottom half of the inning.
OSU created separation with a six-run uprising in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 9-3. Each of the first seven Cowgirls to come to the plate reached base, with Rachel Becker delivering a two-RBI single, Tallen Edwards singling home Megan Bloodworth and Naomi clearing the bases with a three-run blast to left for her second home run of the game.
Naomi's multi-HR day was the first for a Cowgirl since 2021 and marked the second time in her career she's hit multiple home runs in a game. The first came against Missouri State in March 2020.
Virginia Tech responded with three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game at nine.
Factor started the OSU seventh with a leadoff single to right and moved to second on a Wark ground-out to short. Pinch-hitting for Bloodworth, Lott laced an 0-and-2 pitch into right-center to score Factor and deliver the win for OSU.
"It was a really good, tough game," Gajewski said. "It was a grinder, a three-hour game and that's what it's all about when you come here to Clearwater and get in these types of games, and I'm just happy we came out on top. We still have a lot we need to work on and I'm excited about the opportunity tomorrow, as well."
OSU returns to play twice tomorrow, with the first game starting at 9:30 a.m. CT against RV/22 Louisiana. All games of the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational will be streamed across the ESPN networks or streamed on ESPN+.
