Oklahoma State establishes new Graduation Success Rate record
December 06, 2023 | General
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State Athletics produced its best department-wide score to date on the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data that was released today, with 92 percent of OSU student-athletes across all sports from the 2016 freshman cohort graduating within six years.
OSU's previous overall record GSR score was 88, set by the 2015 freshman cohort in data released last year.
Of a possible 13 sports that are measured, OSU had seven with scores of 90 or better and matched a school record with five programs scoring 95 or better.
The women's golf and baseball programs recorded perfect scores of 100 to lead the way. It marked the fifth consecutive year that women's golf scored 100 and the second straight year for baseball.
In addition to women's golf and baseball, other OSU sports with scores at 95 or better were women's cross country/track and field (97), softball (96) and soccer (95).
Cowboy Football and Cowboy Wrestling both set program records this year, with the football team scoring an 86 and the wrestling program scoring 91. The football team has experienced improvement each of the last five years and the wrestling team's mark shattered its previous record of 83 by a comfortable margin.
For the third consecutive year, Cowgirl Softball recorded a 96 to match its existing record.
The OSU sports that showed the greatest improvement in this year's GSR data from a year ago were men's basketball, wrestling and men's cross country/track and field.
The data used in compiling the GSR is based on a six-year cycle, which means the NCAA numbers released today pertain to student-athletes who entered as freshmen for the 2016-17 academic year. The data compiled this year takes the first-year class from 2016, meaning a 2016 freshman who graduated by 2022 would be added to the percentage of those who graduated.
The graduation rate is calculated by taking the number of athletes who enrolled in that year and comparing it to the number who graduated within six years. It does take transfers in and out of the school into account.
