McDowall and Filiatreau Earn Riders of the Month Honors
December 06, 2023 | Cowgirl Equestrian
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State equestrian's Claire McDowall has been named the NCEA and Big 12 November Horsemanship Rider of the Month, while freshman phenom Emma Filiatreau earned Big 12 Co-Reining Rider of the Month, the respective organizations announced Wednesday.
Â
This marks the first time McDowall has earned either title in her career and serves as the second time in as many years a Cowgirl has earned the national Rider of the Month. McDowall is the fourth Horsemanship rider in OSU history to claim November's Big 12 Rider of the Month, alongside all-timers Jojo Roberson, Katy Krshka and Miranda Reed.Â
Â
In her first fall season as a Cowgirl, Filiatreau is the first freshman to claim the conference's monthly honor since Hannah Mitchell in 2017. Likewise, she's the first Reining rider since Molly Mitchell in 2022 to bring home the title.
Â
In November, McDowall claimed two consecutive road MOPs against top-10 opponents No. 7 South Carolina and No. 5 Georgia. She was the lone Cowgirl in both meets to earn MOP and are the second and third of her season.
Â
The senior went undefeated in November and is on a four-ride win streak, the longest of her career. Additionally, it's the second time she's gone undefeated in a month with at least three rides in her career, and the first time in the regular season. Her six wins to conclude OSU's fall season leads all Cowgirls in any event.
Â
So far this season, McDowall has scored at least 74 points in six of her seven rides, showcasing her ability as one of, if not the most reliable point-scorers and winners on OSU. She's the second Cowgirl this season to earn two consecutive MOPs, but the first to do so on the road in back-to-back days. The last OSU Horsemanship rider to earn back-to-back MOPs in road meets was Roberson in 2022.
Â
Filiatreau concluded the fall season on a four-ride win streak and was 3-0-0 in the month of November. She leads OSU's Reining squad with a 5-1-1 overall record heading into the spring season. Filiatreau is the first Reining Cowgirl freshman to go undefeated in a month since all-timer Hannah Lovrien in 2018-19, who also won four-straight rides in that span.
Â
While she didn't earn MOP for her performance against Fresno State, she did score the highest of any rider in the event that day by one point. She also tied as the leading scorer for the Cowgirls against South Carolina.
Â
Like McDowall, Filiatreau has consistently scored high in her competitions, dropping below 70 points only twice.
Â
McDowall and Filiatreau become the first pair of Western riders to sweep the Big 12 monthly award since Sarah Miller (Horsemanship) and Hannah Mitchell (Reining).
