Game Notes:
• After a first half with seven lead changes and six ties, the Cowboys surmounted a double-digit deficit in the second half to have an opportunity to win on their final possession. However, a pair of missed shot attempts kept Southern Illinois on the high side, 70-68.
• Oklahoma State held a 20-10 edge on the glass in the first half, while Southern Illinois starred at the charity stripe through 20 minutes, shooting 12-of-13. Xavier Johnson accounted for all 13 first-half free throws for the Salukis.
• OSU pitched a feisty defensive effort, forcing eight SIU turnovers in the first half. However, they only gave up one in the second half.
• Both backcourts shined in the scoring department as Javon Small posted 25 points for the Cowboys, while Xavier Johnson, who ranked fourth in the nation in scoring (23.1 PPG) entering Tuesday, logged 32 points.
• The Cowboys wrangled up a season-high 20 offensive rebounds on Tuesday. Their rebounding effort marked their most offensive rebounds since posting 20 against North Texas in the NIT quarterfinals on March 31.
• Freshman Brandon Garrison logged a career-high 10 rebounds, with five coming on both ends.
• Javon Small, Bryce Thompson, Quion Williams, Eric Dailey Jr. and Brandon Garrison started for the Cowboys.
Game Flow:
• On the first possession of play, Williams picked Xavier Johnson's pocket in the halfcourt, hammering down a right-handed jam in transition.
• Bryce Thompson went coast-to-coast after picking up a loose ball from the Salukis. After a missed layup, Eric Dailey Jr. mustered up a second-chance bucket to put OSU ahead, 7-2.
• Johnson picked up two quick fouls for the Salukis, heading to the bench after three-and-a-half minutes.
• The Cowboys used Johnson's absence to their advantage, stacking a 9-2 lead which included a near five-minute scoring drought from SIU.
• Johnson's return got SIU back in rhythm, posting nine points (seven at the foul line) in his first four minutes back in play.
• OSU hounded the Salukis on the glass through 10 minutes, carrying an 11-3 advantage.
• SIU took its first lead of the game up 19-18 behind a 12-5 run, but was countered by a 7-2 stint from OSU.
• Back-and-forth swings became the trend in the closing portion of the first half, with seven lead changes and five ties in the final nine minutes. With Thompson converting on a tough driving layup, both sides entered the halftime horn tied, 34-34.
• Small, who had 12 points in the first half, opened the second half with a driving layup and assist.
• After a Salukis turnover, WIlliams threw down a right-handed tomahawk in transition.
• SIU got hot from deep, drilling a pair of threes in a 10-0 Salukis run. They added to their hot streak, hitting eight of nine shots, to mount a 19-5 run and a double-digit lead.
• Jarius Hicklen was an immediate spark plug off the bench, hitting three-consecutive triples to help close the gap to three.
• Inside two minutes, Brandon Garrison knotted the game at 64 after capping off a second-chance layup.
• Johnson picked Small's pocket in the halfcourt, slashing to the basket for a transition layup.
• Small drew a foul on the other end, tying play with 52 seconds to play off a pair of free throws.
• A broken down play resulted in an errant layup from Johnson. However, Clarence Rupert cleaned up the miss and converted an and-one layup to put SIU ahead, 69-66, with 28 seconds.
• After a block by SIU forward Troy D'Amico, the refs assessed a technical foul to him after the play. Small nailed two free throws to tighten play to one with 17 seconds.
• Small and Williams missed on the final possession, yielding Salukis two free throws off the miss. The Cowboys' full-court inbound with 0.4 seconds remaining was tipped, ending the contest.
