Gundy Meets with Media Following Rodeo Bowl Ahead of TaxAct Texas Bowl
December 23, 2023 | Cowboy Football
HOUSTON, Texas – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy met with the media following the Rodeo Bowl in Houston Saturday night. Here's some of what he said:
Opening statement:
"We're thrilled to be here at the TaxAct Texas Bowl. It was a lot of fun tonight at the rodeo and we're excited about the game. [We're looking forward to playing coach Robinson and Texas A&M, and our players have had a great couple of days and looking forward to a few more before an exciting game."
On the Rodeo Bowl:
"Yeah, that was fun. We've been very fortunate. We've been to a lot of bowl games, and this is one of the coolest things at any bowl game that they do with the teams together. It's really cool, the rodeo act, and both teams [and] the players get into it and it's a lot of fun. A lot of close calls tonight at the rodeo, but a lot of fun for both teams."
On if any players impressed him at the Rodeo Bowl:
"Well, they all do. I will have to say Oklahoma State was fortunate. [Texas A&M was the] first one up when they were trying to brand the calves and they saw what happened, so our guys knew to go tackle him right away. Bo Hardy, our guy that did the roping, was four-for-four. I have been told that Bryce Drummond, who was our anchor, was our best roper. He didn't get to go because of the score, but I was told he was supposed to be the best one out of all of them. So, always a surprise but a lot of fun."
On preparing for Texas A&M:
"So, you know, times have changed in college football, and we use these practices to get better at what we do, and we put in game plans for Texas A&M. We don't have much of an idea of what's going to go on, so we've worked hard on just trying to improve ourselves. Texas A&M has a lot of good players. I know they have a lot of players that aren't playing in this game, but some of the guys that were playing behind them are still good football players. [They're] a very, very, very talented team, so we've worked some on Texas A&M, but more so on Oklahoma State."
On if it benefits recruiting to play a bowl game in Houston:
"We kind of consider Texas as in-state for us, when you get central Texas north. We used to recruit a lot in Houston, and then not so much when Texas A&M went to the SEC, but now we're back in it with Houston being in the Big 12. So, we're back down in the Houston area. We've always had really, really good players [from Houston]. Seven-and-a-half million people live in Houston and really top-notch football. Texas high school football is big here, so it's great for us to play in this bowl game."
