December 02, 2023 | Cowboy Wrestling
LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma State wrestler Izzak Olejnik secured his spot in the semifinal round of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and surpassed 100 career wins while competing at the Westgate Paradise Event Center Friday night.
Olejnik entered Friday with 97 career wins and ran through the 165-pound bracket, collecting a pair of falls on his way to a 4-0 day. He opened the day with a 4-1 decision over Guillermo Escobedo of CSU Bakersfield in the pigtail round before pinning The Citadel's Ben Haubert in 5:21 in the following match.
In the Round of 16, Olejnik reached the century mark in career wins with his second straight fall over 14th-seeded Stoney Buell of Purdue in 1:52. Olejnik then picked up an 8-1 decision over No. 11 Giano Petrucelli (Air Force) to reach tomorrow's semifinals, where he will take on Michigan's second-seeded Cameron Amine.
As a team, Oklahoma State finished the day in 10th with 50 points. Iowa State leads the field with 88.5 points, while Ohio State and Nebraska sit close behind at 86 and 82.5 points, respectively.
Fourth-seeded Dustin Plott earned bonus points in his first two matches of the day with an 18-7 major decision over Aaron Ayzerov of Columbia and 21-5 technical fall against Campbell's No. 13 Caleb Hopkins. In a back-and-forth quarterfinal matchup, Plott narrowly fell to No. 5 Lenny Pinto of Nebraska, 12-10. He went on to post a 17-1 technical fall over Ohio's No. 16 Zayne Lehman in just 3:30 in the ensuing consolation match. Plott will take on No. 11 Sam Fisher of Virginia Tech tomorrow morning.
Tagen Jamison, the 10th-seed at 141 pounds, is also still alive in the consolation bracket after a solid 3-1 day. Jamison posted back-to-back victories to reach the quarterfinal round, where he faced second-seeded Brock Hardy of Nebraska. Hardy took the match, 4-0, but Jamison quickly bounced back with a 7-6 decision over No. 12 Sergio Lemley of Michigan in consolations. Jamison is set to face sixth-seeded Vince Cornella of Cornell tomorrow morning.
Reece Witcraft, Luke Surber and Konner Doucet all put together solid performances in the morning session to reach the quarterfinal round. Witcraft, who was filling in for Daton Fix at 133 pounds following a late scratch, went 2-2 on the day. He secured a big 7-3 decision over No. 3 Julian Chlebove (Arizona State) in the Round of 16, but was ultimately eliminated following losses to Stanford's Tyler Knox and No. 12 Ethan Oakley of Appalachian State.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Surber and sixth-seeded Doucet were both forced to exit the tournament due to injury. Surber opened the day with a fast fall over CSU Bakersfield's Khristian Dove and 7-3 decision against No. 13 Julien Broderson of Iowa State, but missed his remaining matches due an injury sustained in the Round of 16. Six seconds into Doucet's quarterfinal matchup with No. 3 Grady Griess of Navy, he also went down and forfeited out of the remaining competition.
Troy Spratley went 3-2 on Friday as the No. 10 seed in the 125-pound bracket. Spratley posted a 9-5 decision against Navy's Evan Tallamdge, but dropped to the consolation bracket following a close 9-8 defeat to No. 7 Tanner Jordan of South Dakota State.
