NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 18 Oklahoma, 28-9, on Sunday at McCasland Field House in the first of two Phillips 66 Bedlam Series duals. With the win, OSU remained undefeated at 3-0 while the Sooners dropped to 4-2.
The win was Oklahoma State's 18th straight over the Sooners and No. 150 in the all-time series. OSU leads the series with Oklahoma, 150-27-10, while John Smith is 57-6-3 against the Sooners as head coach.
OSU won four of five matches prior to intermission to a secure a wide lead and never looked back. Three unranked Cowboys reeled in victories, including two wins over ranked opponents from Reece Witcraft and Brayden Thompson.
"All of our duals have started at 125, and we've been very competitive up there this year and it's helped us," coach Smith said. "I want to see us open it up more in the second and third period, instead of just leaning on that first takedown. Everyone has been doing their part and it's been good for us."
Troy Spratley got the Cowboys on the board first with a 4-1 decision over No. 32 Conrad Hendriksen. He is now 10-2 on the year following a pair of ranked wins throughout the weekend.
With Daton Fix unavailable, Reece Witcraft once again filled in at 133 pounds and picked up a big 8-1 decision over No. 27 Jace Koelzer. Tagen Jamison then held off Kaden Smith, 6-3, at 149 pounds, building OSU's lead up to 9-0.
Following No. 22 Willie McDougald's tight 5-4 decision over Jordan Williams, Teague Travis snatched back the momentum and sent the Cowboys into the break with an 11-2 major decision over John Wiley. Travis tacked on points late in the third period to secure bonus points and gave OSU a 13-3 advantage at intermission.
At 165 pounds, Izzak Olejnik picked up right where the team left off, defeating No. 16 Cael Carlson, 8-3. Olejnik, who is now 13-0 and ranked second in the country by Intermat, has defeated a ranked opponent in six straight matches, dating back to the quarterfinal round of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
After claiming his first career win on Friday against Lehigh, Brayden Thompson upset No. 17 Tate Picklo, 9-0, for the first ranked win of his career. The freshman jumped out in front early and tacked on points throughout the third period to earn a major decision.
"He did a nice job finding ways to win it," Smith said. "It took some adjustment on his part and on ours. He was able to make that adjustment this weekend. I thought this was a huge weekend for him as far as his demeanor goes. He stayed focused. When he had the opportunity to score, he did. He is going after things and not worrying about the outcome, and that's how you win."
Dustin Plott continued his stellar start to the season with a dominant 19-2 technical fall over No. 32 Giuseppe Hoose in 4:18. Plott has now earned bonus points a dozen times in 14 total matches this season, most on the team.
Second-ranked Stephen Buchanan pinned Kyle Haas in 4:19 at 197 pounds, but Konner Doucet capped off the dual with a clutch 2-1 decision over No. 10 Josh Heindselman in tiebreakers. The win marked Doucet's first over a top-10 opponent in his career.
In their final dual of the calendar year, the Cowboys will return to action on Dec. 19 against Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. The dual is slated for 7 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on FloWrestling.
