Series History: Cowboys search for Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship over Texas
December 01, 2023 | Cowboy Football
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are in sight of history heading into AT&T Stadium on Saturday. In the 28th rendition of the Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship, OSU and Texas will clash one final time as conference foes before the Longhorns join the SEC for the 2023-24 season.
Â
The stakes and history run deep.
Â
For the Cowboys, this contest marks their second conference championship berth in the last three years and an opportunity to raise the Big 12 title for the first time since 2011. With each of its previous championships coming outside of a championship game format, a win on Saturday would mark the program's first win in a conference championship game and its 12th conference championship since 1926.
Â
On the other end, the Longhorns are looking to notch their fourth Big 12 Championship and their first since 2009.
Â
Oklahoma State trails Texas, 26-11, in all-time meetings, but carries an edge in recent history. The Cowboys have won their last nine-of-13 contests against the Longhorns, including wins in six of their last eight. Additionally, they uncorked five consecutive wins in Austin from 2010-17, the only time a team has won five straight trips in Austin.
Â
While the initial schedule looked to end these programs' head-to-head streak, its clash in the Big 12 Championship extended its meetings to 28 consecutive years, dating back to the first season of the Big 12 Conference play in 1996.Â
Â
In a full circle moment, this will be the second neutral site game between the Cowboys and Longhorns. The first came in the program's first meeting on Oct. 13, 1916, in San Antonio, Texas, and the second will come on Saturday in Arlington in the last scheduled meeting for the foreseeable future.
Â
Oklahoma State heads to AT&T Stadium in hopes of adding its second Big 12 Championship, and 12th conference championship since 1926, while Texas looks to collect its fourth Big 12 Championship. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT and the game will be televised live on ABC with Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy and Molly McGrath on the call.
