Jake Springfield Named a Burlsworth Trophy Semifinalist
November 09, 2023 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State offensive lineman Jake Springfield is one of 10 semifinalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on.
Springfield, a redshirt senior who has been a regular in the starting lineup for four seasons, began his Cowboy career as a walk-on before being awarded a scholarship in August of 2020.
Originally from Flower Mound, Texas, Springfield has 35 starts at Oklahoma State to rank as the most on the team in 2023.
He was honored as an honorable mention to the coaches All-Big 12 team last season as he was one of two offensive players and six total Cowboys to start every game in 2022, and he is putting together an impressive season again in 2023.
Off the field, Springfield has already earned a Bachelor of Science in Management and Marketing, and he is a three-time first team Academic All-Big 12 selection with a chance to earn another selection in 2023.
The Burlsworth Trophy selection committee will announce the top three Burlsworth Trophy finalists on November 14. Finalists will be honored and the winner of the 2023 Burlsworth Trophy will be announced on December 4 at 7 p.m. at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas.
The trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, who walked on at Arkansas in 1994, worked his way to being a three-year starter and was eventually named an All-American in 1998. Burlsworth was selected as the 63rd overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL Draft but was tragically killed in a car accident 11 days later. The Burlsworth Foundation was created in his memory and supports the physical and spiritual needs of children, in particular those children who have limited opportunities.
Springfield and the Cowboys return to action Saturday, facing UCF in Orlando at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
