STILLWATER -- Oklahoma State and Creighton are implementing a full court press against cancer with a special "Survivor Night" presented by The Eddie Sutton Foundation. The two teams, both of which were coached by Sutton during his storied career, square off at 8 p.m. CT Thursday inside Gallagher-Iba Arena as part of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle series.
Â
Established in memory of Sutton, who died in 2020, The Eddie Sutton Foundation raises funds for valuable research needed to fight cancer and impacts the lives of those who currently fighting through awareness nights at OSU sporting events.
Â
Thursday night's game also provides both schools with a special opportunity to reflect on Sutton's legacy and the impact that he made on their respective men's basketball programs. Sutton started his hall of fame career at Creighton (1969-74) and coached for 16 years in Stillwater (1990-2006).
Â
"It is an honor to carry on the great legacy of Eddie Sutton," Greg McDermott, head men's basketball coach at Creighton said. "We are fortunate to participate in such an impactful event to honor those who are fighting cancer. Â
The foundation commits to remembering Sutton's principles, defense, dedication and discipline. The "Cowboys vs Cancer program", the Cowboy Classic Golf Tournament, the Sixth Man Scholarship Program and the annual Bash for kids fighting cancer are all under the foundation's umbrella.
Â
"We are all united in the fight against cancer, and we are proud to fight alongside Creighton to bring awareness to this terrible disease," OSU head coach Mike Boynton Jr. said. "Coach Sutton made a lasting impact on the game basketball, and he continues to make an impact off the court through the Eddie Sutton Foundation."
Â
In recognition of Survivor Night, The Eddie Sutton Foundation is offering $1 tickets for cancer survivors and their families. Fans will have the opportunity to commemorate loved ones by filling out custom "I scowl at cancer in memory of…" signs – a nod to Sutton and his infamous scowl.
