The No. 21-ranked Cowboys carry a 2-0 record over the Cougars, winning both of its previous games on neutral sites.
Both of the program's duels have come during bowl season. The Cowboys started the series' history at the 1974 Fiesta Bowl where they defeated the No. 17 Cougars, 16-6. In its second meeting, the No. 14 Cowboys took down the Cougars, 49-21, at the 1976 Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida.
The Oklahoma State defense dominated in the last meeting, with defensive tackle Chris Dawson taking a 36-yard interception to the house in the first quarter. The team continued to pitch forth a pesky effort for quarterback Gifford Nielson as he threw three more interceptions with Milton Kirven, Gary Irons and Jerry Cramer getting into the mix.
Offensively, Cowboy Football Ring of Honor member Terry Miller ran rampant for 173 rushing yards with four touchdowns – highlighted by a 78-yard run. Running back Robert Turner supported Miller with 80 yards across 22 attempts, picking up a touchdown in the process.
Oklahoma State returns to Boone Pickens Stadium with an opportunity to secure its second Big 12 Championship berth in the last three years, while BYU eyes bowl eligibility carrying a 5-6 record. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT, and the game will be televised live on ABC with Anish Shroff, Andre Ware and Paul Carcaterra on the call.
