Series History: Cowboys Look to Even Score With Houston
November 17, 2023 | Cowboy Football
The No.23-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys will look to even its series history against the Houston Cougars on Saturday.
For the Cowboys, they'll be looking to collect their 10th win over the Cougars while notching its first conference win over the program since 1956. Currently, Oklahoma State trails 9-10-1, with its lone tie – a 6-6 result – coming on Oct. 19, 1956.
The Cowboys and Cougars shared a rivalry as Missouri Valley Conference foes in the 1950s. Upon Houston's admission into the MVC in 1951, both programs clashed in seven conference battles until 1957, continuing to play annually until 1961.
Oklahoma State is 1-2 in the Mike Gundy era against the Cougars, with its latest contest coming as a 45-35 defeat on Sep. 12, 2009.
Highlighted by an 82-yard Dez Bryant punt return, the No. 5-ranked Cowboys surmounted a 17-point halftime deficit scoring 21 points unanswered in the third quarter. Following a pair of lead changes, Zac Robinson found Josh Cooper for a 22-yard touchdown to go up four in the fourth. However, a Cougars touchdown and a tip-drill pick-six put the game out of reach.
Robinson threw for 240 yards with a touchdown and interception for the Cowboys, while running backs Kendall Hunter, Keith Tolson and Beau Johnson chipped in three touchdowns in a combined 225-yard rushing effort.
Bryant netted 210 all-purpose yards in the game and Cooper added 64 yards across five receptions.
For the Cougars, they found daylight in the passing game as Case Keenum threw for three touchdowns and one interception on 366 passing yards. Keenum went on to finish the season eighth in Heisman voting.
Oklahoma State heads to TDECU Stadium looking to advance to 8-3 on the season, while Houston enters its senior day looking to keep its bowl hopes alive as it currently sits at 4-6. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. CT, and the game will be televised live on ESPN2 with Dave Flemming, Brock Osweiler and Kayla Burton on the call.
