Series History: Cowboys Hope To Improve Lead Over Kansas 100 Years After First Meeting
October 13, 2023 | Cowboy Football
Marking the 100-year anniversary of its first meeting, Oklahoma State hopes to extend its series lead over the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Â
With its first meeting in 1923, the Cowboys control a 41-30-2 all-time series edge over the Jayhawks. Oklahoma State has etched the win column in its last six home meetings versus Kansas, while also winning 12 of the last 13 contests.Â
Â
Overall in the Mike Gundy era, the Cowboys have gone 13-2 versus the Jayhawks, outscoring them 634-to-292.
Â
Saturday tabs the first time since Nov. 10, 2007, in which the Cowboys will face a ranked Kansas squad. Polling in at No. 23, the Jayhawks also clock in as Oklahoma State's first ranked opponent of the season – and it's first in Stillwater since Oct. 22, 2022. In the October matchup, the Cowboys defeated the then No. 20 ranked Texas Longhorns 41-34.
Â
In last year's contest, Garret Rangel made his first career start at quarterback, going 27-of-40 for 304 yards and a pair of touchdowns. For the then true freshman, his total called for the seventh-most yards by a freshman in program history, and the most by a freshman quarterback since Wes Lunt logged 324 yards on Oct. 27, 2012.
Â
On the receiving end, Jaden Nixon hauled in a 35-yard reception during play. For Nixon, this grab marked his career-long reception until reeling in a 60-yard touchdown pass earlier in the year versus Iowa State.
Â
With both teams coming off season-high point totals, Oklahoma State looks to move to 4-2 on Saturday, while Kansas hopes to clinch bowl-eligible status at 6-1. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT, and the game will be televised live on FS1 with Jeff Levering and Mark Helfrich on the call.
