Six Cowboys Advance to Semifinals, OSU Sits in Second Place After First Day of Southern Scuffle

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Six Oklahoma State wrestlers advanced through to the semifinal round of the Southern Scuffle on Sunday at McKenzie Arena. Trevor Mastrogiovanni, Daton Fix, Victor Voinovich, Dustin Plott, Travis Wittlake and Gavin Stika each won three matches on the first day of the Scuffle to secure their spots in the semifinal round, which will begin at 12 p.m. CT on Monday.
No. 14 Oklahoma State finished Sunday in second place as a team with 74 points, trailing only No. 10 Missouri at 79.5 points. Fifteen Cowboys remain alive entering Monday's session with six in the championship bracket and nine in the consolations.
All 10 starters for the Cowboys advanced to the quarterfinal rounds and remain alive heading into the second and final day of the tournament. Carter Young, Kaden Gfeller, Wyatt Sheets, Luke Surber, Kyle Haas and Konner Doucet all won their first two matches, but dropped to the wrestlebacks after suffering defeats in the quarterfinal rounds.
Mastrogiovanni collected three decisions on Sunday to set up a matchup with third seed Noah Surtin of Missouri. At 133 pounds, Fix dominated as the top seed in the bracket picking up a first-period fall, a technical fall and a 5-2 decision over Iowa State's Zach Redding as he aims to win his second title at the Southern Scuffle after doing so in 2019. After a third-place finish at the Scuffle last season, Voinovich entered this season's tournament as the fourth seed and advanced to the semifinal by way of two decisions and an 18-5 major decision.
Plott and Wittlake each collected a major decision and two decisions over their first three matches, while Stika used a fall and an upset over third-seeded Jacob Nolan of Binghamton to advance to the semifinal matchup opposite of Wittlake.
The Cowboys began the tournament strong posting a combined 18-4 record from the 22 wrestlers competing for OSU. In the opening round, the Cowboys recorded 11 bonus-point wins with six wins coming via fall. Arguably the best win from a Cowboy on the day came from highly-touted true freshman Jordan Williams, who defeated third-seeded Ethan Miller of Maryland. After taking out Williams, who is ranked No. 18 at 149 pounds, Williams used a flurry of flashy moves en route to a 20-8 major decision over Duke's Patrick Rowland. In his quarterfinal bout, Williams fell behind 7-2 in the first period before battling back, but ultimately falling to Kellyn March (NDSU), 10-9.
Reece Witcraft and Travis Mastrogiovanni both won two matches in the consolation bracket to advance to Monday's second consolation round of eight. As for the rest of the Cowboys, Andrew Bloemhof went 3-2 on the day, while Teague Travis went 2-2 at 141 pounds. Freshman Cutter Sheets collected a major decision in his first bout before dropping two straight. Daniel Manibog eliminated Luke Mechler in the consolation round of 16, although both 157-pounders went 2-2 at the tournament. At 165 pounds, Jalin Harper went 1-2, while Chance McLane was leading former national champion Shane Griffith in the third period, but gave up a late takedown and turn to drop the match and ended his tournament with a 1-2 record.
